A master barber performs many of the same tasks as a regular barber, but they possess more training and experience, allowing them to become a master of their craft and command higher pay.
The training curriculum to become a master barber includes all of the standard hair cutting, styling, and coloring techniques using the customary barber tools, such as clippers, razors, and shears. However, in addition to basic barbering techniques, master barbers also learn techniques for hair relaxing, permanent waving, and a variety of other men’s hair and beard services.
Master barber students can also expect to learn the science behind hair styling techniques, health and safety,and barbering first aid. Many top barber schools also teach aspiring master barbers effective barbershop management, client communication, business practices, and the laws and regulations pertaining to barbers in a specific state.
Sure, master barbers have more training, but what really sets them apart from regular barbers? Aside from undergoing additional training, master barbers generally have more experience and provide a higher level of expertise and service than regular barbers. The majority of master barbers have years of experience and have developed a much more proficient level of overall barbering skill, allowing them to truly become masters of their art.
The requirements to become a master barber vary from one state to the next and not all states have the master barber licensing distinction. In some states, work experience alone can classify you as a master barber and allow you to charge more for your expert services. In other states, however, you must complete a certain number of training hours at an accredited school and pass a master barber exam. Some states even require a 24-month apprenticeship in addition to the requirements above.
